How to Copy and Paste Across Devices

· Tutorial · Reading time: 5 min

Copying something on your phone and pasting it on your laptop should be a one-second job. In reality, it's often a frustrating dance of emailing yourself, sending Telegram messages, or fumbling with cables.

Built-in solutions exist — Apple's Universal Clipboard, Microsoft's Phone Link, KDE Connect — but they all share the same limitation: they only work between devices in the same ecosystem. The moment you mix iPhone with Windows, or Android with Mac, they break down.

This guide explains how to copy and paste between any two devices, regardless of operating system, using a free online clipboard. We'll cover text, images, and files, plus shortcuts for popular OS combinations.

The universal approach: a shared web clipboard

Instead of relying on OS-specific tools, use a web page that any browser can open. CloudPaste creates a private channel with a unique URL. Whatever you put in it appears on every device that has the URL open — instantly.

  • Source device: the one you're copying from.
  • Destination device: the one you're pasting to.
  • Channel URL: the bridge between them.

The 3-step copy-and-paste workflow

Step 1 — Open a channel on the source device

Go to cloudpaste.io in any browser. A channel URL like cloudpaste.io/#/abc12345 is generated automatically.

Step 2 — Get the URL onto the destination device

You have several options:

  • QR code (fastest for desktop → mobile): hover or tap the QR icon, then scan with your phone's camera.
  • Copy URL button: tap it and send the link via any messaging app.
  • Memorable channel name: click + Create and choose a name like my-notes. Type cloudpaste.io/#/my-notes directly on the other device.

Step 3 — Copy on one side, paste on the other

What you do here depends on the content type:

Copy and paste text

  1. On the source device, paste your text into the Text board (Ctrl/Cmd+V or just type).
  2. The text auto-saves and appears on the destination device immediately.
  3. On the destination, click Copy Text to put it on the system clipboard.
  4. Paste it into your target app with Ctrl/Cmd+V.

Try copy & paste across devices now

Open CloudPaste in two browsers — even on different devices — and watch them sync.

Open CloudPaste →

Copy and paste images (including screenshots)

  1. Switch to the Images tab.
  2. On Windows or macOS: take a screenshot, then press Ctrl/Cmd+V directly inside the upload area to paste it.
  3. On mobile: tap the upload area and pick from your photo library, or share an image to your browser → CloudPaste.
  4. On the destination device, click any image to view full size, or use the download button to save it.

Copy and paste files

  1. Switch to the Files tab.
  2. Drag a file into the upload area, or click to select.
  3. On the destination device, hit Download on the file card.

OS-specific shortcuts

iPhone or Android → Windows / macOS / Linux

Open CloudPaste on your phone, paste, then scan the desktop's QR code or share the URL via your browser's Send to your devices feature.

Windows → macOS / iPhone

Use Snipping Tool (Win+Shift+S) for screenshots, then Ctrl+V inside CloudPaste's image board. On the Mac or iPhone, open the same URL.

macOS → Windows / Android

Cmd+Shift+4 for screenshot, Cmd+V into the image board. On the receiving device, open the channel URL and download.

Between two browsers on the same device

It works the same way — useful for moving text between profiles or between regular and incognito sessions.

Tips for everyday use

  • Bookmark a personal channel. Pick a custom name and bookmark the URL on every device you own. It becomes your universal clipboard.
  • Lock the channel if you want to prevent accidental edits while reading.
  • Encrypt sensitive content with the 🔑 icon for passwords, secrets, or private documents.
  • Clear when done. Use the Clear button to wipe a channel after sensitive transfers.

FAQ

Does it work without installing anything?

Yes. Any modern browser is enough — Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, on any OS.

Can I copy formatted text (bold, links)?

The text board treats content as plain text. For rich formatting, paste into a Markdown or HTML-aware app on the receiving end.

Is my content private?

Channels are accessible to anyone with the URL. For private transfers, use the encryption feature, then send the password through a separate channel.

What if my channel URL is too long to type?

Use the QR code on desktop, or click + Create to choose a custom short channel name.
